Yoga - to yoke or join self and Universe - An Orientation PathAs a seeker of the New Age from earliest times I yearned for answers to why are we here, what is it all about? As a survivor of trauma on multiple fronts I needed to know Why and had the opportunity to be thrust out of mundane existence into a world of feelings and otherness. The answer to the ultimate question as described by Douglas Adams was a comfort to me and his larger conceptialization of life and its jovial tribulations. To Laugh at human folly and fight on when the going got tuff, and larger cosmic perspective most certainly helped me through. Yet the application of personal growth encouraged by self help, counsellors, psychologist and the pervasive and overwhelming feeling and not so subtle feedback from the other apemen that I was somehow flawed and getting it wrong propelled me onward in a search for peace within and peace without. Crystals and chakras, energy healing, totem animals, sacred souls and mystical encounters with wise characters led me futher along a spiritual path. I had been exposed to Eastern philosphophy when reading a book my World travelling uncle has left at my Grandparents house. He had been to India twice and sat at the side of Krishnamurti for a time. At age 9 or ten living in rural Australia I had naught but a voracious appetite for books. This book had a dreamer meeting with a teacher at night in an astral world and little did I know future reads would lead me through corridors of channeled messages, etheric substance, the power of words and the journey of self realisation. The lure of the new age back then was still shrouded in occult and secrecy but not entangled in conspiracy theory and psychobabble. I learned my skills and avoided the pitfalls (of which there are many), with ego intact and just a normal amount of what one could call negative impact on others in my wake. I gravitated to skills that suited my interpretation of it all and safety in practise such as Usui Reiki - Universal Life force flowing gently clearing cleansing balancing harmonising, without force of will or dictating ones own power or self righteousness. And Naturopathy a broad term for herbal medicine, nutritional medicine and holistic science directed toward the art of healing and self empowered knowledge. My study of Naturopathy and desire to earn a degree led me to University and an opportunity to visit India for a service and learning program learning Ayurveda the Traditional Medicine of the Indian SubContinent. It was here that I met a Doctor of medicine and Ayurveda and Yoga Teacher Dr Prafu and experienced yoga and its intrinsic meditation that is the basis of many New Age and peaceful religious practises. Vedic culture is the origin of chakras, buddhism and yoga. The Sanskrit word Yoga translates to English as " to yoke" to join the self and the universal. The art and a form of dicipline to reach a state of oneness and clarity of being that a seeker is looking for. Vedic culture also describes meditation and as can be seen from the many styles listed Meditation is an act common to all cultures in one form or another. And the search for meaning and internal compass can be found in many ways. A map is a valuable thing and a guide on the path even better. Categories All |
